Poetry through Printmaking

with Snehal Vadher

Printmaking is an artistic process based on the principle of transferring images from a matrix onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. Traditional printmaking techniques include woodcut, etching, engraving, and lithography, while modern artists have expanded available techniques to include screen-printing.

In the elective we started by recollecting our childhood memories, something that has a distinct place in our heart. We learnt how poetry is not just about words.

After reading random pages from random books we made a collage of 10 lines from those texts and then started to play with those lines, trying to make a poem out of it and trying it to connect with our memory. After printing out the poem on an actual typewriter we the proceeded on to making our stamps for printmaking.

Relief printing is a method where we  draw designs on a smooth block of material (usually wood or linoleum) and use tools to carefully cut away the areas that are not to be printed, leaving behind a raised surface of lines and shapes. The surface of the block is inked using a dabber or a roller. Relief prints can be made using a variety of material.

Richie who died during the war,

There wasn't any room to rest

Have you seen my pants?

I've got some. . .
