Building Making
Bimbisar Nagar, Goregaon
Flows - of People and Landscape
Parth Agrawal | Sem 6 | 2023-24
Course Brief
The focus of this studio is three-fold - first to develop an ability in system- thinking and the ability to detailing (detailing here is the act of putting together different materials and their assemblies in a manner that is conceptually coherent with the overall idea of the building); second to develop an ability to make construction documentation drawings (working drawings) that could be used for the construction of buildings; and third, to develop ability to write specifications, generate bill of quantities and cost estimation for the project. The course intends to craft built forms where the logics of spatiality are based on systems and details along with orienting them to the practices around construction documentation and management. Successful completion of this course shall ensure that the student is ready to participate in a building-making project.

The course walked us through the entire building process, the agencies involved in making a building, different documents required on site to start building on-site. The need to structurally resolve a building while making negotiations with layouts.

Site Demarcation
The site of intervention is located in Bimbisar Nagar in Goregaon East. The existing site is an open ground (3000 sq.m) which consists of a Shakha (community space), pump room, public toilet, vachnalay, stage, and a playground. The site shares a compound wall with a primary school.
Bimbisar Nagar is a colony consisting of transit camps, residential colonies, market lanes, school, playgrounds etc.

Design Intent
The side walk accounts for various activities that goes on the site. The design concept emerges from integrating the sidewalk into the design. By using ramps, the sidewalk is woven into the site making it one enormous track that connects the entire design. The ramps then serve multifunctional purposes, transforming into terrace, hawking spaces, cycling/ jogging tracks, kid's play area, nurseries and more. Acting as a focal point they offer moments of leisure amidst activities, pause points. The ramps are designed by setting some self-imposed rules that determine the length, turns through which various spaces emerge in which the built form exists, resulting in a fusion of form and function.
